Finding the best school requires weeks or even months of research, no matter what your program of choice. With so much time spent on determining which college is right for you, there is little time left to find scholarships and other forms of financial aid. If you’re interested in a master’s degree in the public health field, or MPH, you can use this 10 minute guide to find scholarships online in what little free time you have:

Step One: Research opportunities with the government.

Because there is such a high demand for qualified workers in health-related industries, a number of departments through both state and local government offer scholarships and other forms of financial aid to students. Almost all of these opportunities are advertised online, and you can search via the government’s Student Gateway website to find options.

Step Two: Search for private scholarships.

You can also use the government website to search for privatized scholarships available to MPH students. Search for these types of scholarships isn’t so cut and dry, however, since they are often buried on websites, not listed in directories, and sometimes not even posted online. How can you find them as quickly as possible? A good way to at least get the ball rolling is to make a list of all the organizations, both health-related and general, to which you belong. Think about community groups as well as national fraternities and undergraduate activities. Check out the website of each organization to see if they have any scholarships listed that aren’t readily available in the government directory of funds.

Step Three: Search your college’s website.

Almost all colleges have financial aid opportunities available to students. To learn more about options at your college, you can check out both the financial aid office’s page and the public health department page. Even if they don’t flat-out list scholarships available, you can read recent news to see if they are regularly awarding scholarships to students. Don’t be afraid to take you search offline as well; call your school’s financial aid office and contact the dean of your college’s public health program to ask about financial aid available to students. Often, they can direct you not only to college scholarship opportunities, but also to private scholarship funds they know are available to their students. Follow up on any lead they mention by using a search engine to see if their is information posted online.

Step Four: Talk to your employer.

Many students in the public health field don’t get a master’s degree right away. If you’re one of the many who decided to work in the field first, your employer might have scholarships available for you to go back to school. Your employer may also have tuition reimbursement funds, which also help you pay for college. Students who work for major employers can find this information posted on a company website in many cases, or you can talk to your supervisor or manager directly to learn about options available to employees hoping to go back to school.
